Songs of the Week: 9/7/2020-9/11/2020

Hey guys, gals, & non-binary pals!

HOW is it September?! I think last week--the official start to September--just didn't feel as if the month had started yet, but now, we are really in the month of September! Wow!

I have a TON of great new music for you all coming in the next few weeks, but for now, here are some of my recent favorite tracks to get you through this week!

1) "Missing Piece" by Honey Butter

If you're a fan of Lake Street Dive and love the sound they produce, Honey Butter is the group for you! Originally a student band from Northwestern University, Honey Butter combines elements of jazz, soul, and pop to formulate a rather unique sound fit for the streets of Chicago. Their track, "Missing Piece," is electric, dynamic, and show-stopping. There isn't much to dislike about this song! As always, go listen!

2) "Angelus" by The Main Squeeze

"Angelus" is something special! With a funky organ rhythm and a in-the-pocket beat, it embodies a modern-day '70's disco track. It's exciting; it's incredible; and it's impossible not to dance to! Go listen!

3) "Come Down" by Anderson .Paak

Throughout his career, Anderson .Paak has produced some of the grooviest soul/funk tracks in the 21st Century. "Come Down" is certainly one of these groovy tracks. Featured on his 2016 album, Malibu, "Come Down" is a true jam session, showcasing Anderson .Paak's talents as a drummer and the musical experience of each of the Free Nationals, respectfully. Not only is the track great as a studio recording, but is fantastic as the opening track to their Tiny Desk Concert. Go listen!

4) "California" by Taylor Kelly

A newer song on my daily-listening playlist, "California" keeps the funk trend going with its groovy beat and jazzy vocals! Since this song is so new to me, I have very little to divulge, other than to praise it for being enjoyable! I hope to explore more elements of this track in the coming weeks but, for now, go listen!

5) "Flamingo" by Beau Diako

To round off your week, I highly recommend Beau Diako's track, "Flamingo." Consistently, Beau Diako has pushed the boundaries in bedroom pop, utilizing soft electronic backtracks and tasteful electric guitar in his pieces. "Flamingo" utilizes these same elements and is, overall, so satisfying to listen to! Go listen!

Happy Labor Day!

Peace.
