Songs of the Week: 9/21/2020-9/25/2020

Hey guys, gals, and non-binary pals!

I hope you all had a great week last week and are ready for the week ahead! If you don't feel quite ready yet, here are some tracks to get you through!

Enjoy!

1) "September" by Earth, Wind, & Fire

Do you remember the 21st night of September? I sure do! I think it would be a cardinal sin if I didn't include this iconic track on my Songs of the Week for this week, given that today IS the 21st of September. Jokes aside, this track is simply legendary. No matter where you are, no matter who you are with, "September" will always be that song you can't help but get up and dance to. Go dance & go listen!

2) "Health Food" by Berhana

Known for his tracks "Grey Luh" and "Janet," Berhana is the king of r&b/funk influenced hits. His more recent track, "Health Food," released in 2019 and I've been kicking myself recently that I didn't find it sooner. It features a groovy bass beat, which serves as the canvas for the familiar 'twang of an electric guitar. Combined with Berhana's youthful lyrics and soft vocals, the track is perfect. "Health Food" is fun; it has depth; and most importantly, it's ever-so funky! Go listen!

3) "Kumbaya" by Nick Dorian, Shibo

I am virtually obsessed with the uniqueness of "Kumbaya" each and every time I listen to it. It's thought-provoking; it's electric; and it's stunning. The intro expertly captures the feeling of negative thoughts in your head through a harmonious cacophony of voices guiding you into the piece. The rest of the track is wonderful, utilizing elements of jazz and blues to create the quintessential easy-listening tune. I highly recommend this unique track! Go listen!

4) "Best Tears" by The Happy Fits

You ever listen to a song that instantly makes you happy, no matter what mood you were in before listening to it? For me, that song is "Best Tears" by The Happy Fits. Even with a misleading title, I think it's virtually impossible to feel down while listening to this track! It has a sound similar to that of early Young the Giant, which most likely explains my obsession. There isn't much to say about this track other than...go listen!

5) "Bloodsport '15" by Raleigh Ritchie

I have a lot of memories with this track dating all the way back to high school. Recently, I made probably my most dangerous playlist, featuring songs I exclusively listened to in high school and have not revisited since I graduated. However, this week, I revisited "Bloodsport '15" and haven't stopped listening since. Written, produced, and performed by Jacob Anderson (known as his musical alias Raleigh Ritchie AND who starred as Greyworm in the hit HBO show, Game of Thrones), "Bloodsport '15" is a testament to worldly anger; at least, I think so. In all honesty, even after revisiting the song some 4-5 years later, I still don't know what it is about. Regardless, this song is ridiculously stunning and, even if it doesn't have a strict meaning, it is wonderful to listen to (especially, 3:15-3:25, which gives me visible goosebumps EVERY time). Go listen!

Have a great week!

Peace.
