Artist Radar: Tora

What a powerhouse. An innovator. An artist.

I began listening to Tora after hearing her most recent song, “Call Your Name,” on the popular Spotify playlist, POLLEN. “Call Your Name” shocked me to my core. It’s raw. It’s impressive. It’s captivating. And you must listen to it. But now, I must tell you about the artist behind its power.

Arriving on Spotify a little after the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in March, Tora has risen in popularity with her three tracks, “Pisonia Prologue,” “Vein” and, her most popular, and my previously stated favorite, “Call Your Name.”

Her first track “Pisonia Prologue” opens softly and reveals Tora’s smooth, dark, honey-filled voice. Her silky vocals pair well with the electronic backing, creating an r&b feel similar to the queen herself, Kehlani.

Her second track “Vein” opens in the same soft manner, giving us a moment to truly listen to and admire her sweet voice. For a short while, it is just us, the piano, and Tora, creating an intimate atmosphere and making us hold onto every word. Finally, the electronics kick in and we are transported to a new feel, yet one similar to “Pisonia Prologue.” “Vein” is a strong piece, but perhaps, her most strongest is “Call Your Name.”

As I had previously stated, this song is incredible. It hooked me with its brassy introduction and raw vocals and it kept my attention until the very last note, from which I was left wanting more. “Call Your Name” rose in popularity this past week, reaching over 1 million listens on Spotify and catching the attention of prestigious music blogs. For good reason, too. Through this piece, Tora takes us to pinnacle highs and powerful lows, all through the use of a brassy saxophone riff and her soft, velvety vocals. The duality of this piece is powerful and one that cannot be described in simple words. It’s impeccable. It’s powerful. And it’s one that you must listen to.

I look forward to following Tora’s musical journey and listening to more of her yet-released pieces. For now, stream “Call Your Name,” “Vein,” and “Pisonia Prologue.”

You won’t be sorry.

Peace.
